Storm Cellars

The Installation Process

Storm cellar installation begins with excavating, a hole large enough to accommodate the structure. Most homeowners choose to install precast emergency shelters. It’s important to choose a model that has plenty of space to accommodate the entire family, including household pets. Contact Lone Star Backhoe and Septic to discuss options, including different pre-cast storm shelter models and ideal placement on the property.

Once homeowners have chosen what kind of storm shelter, they want to have installed, the contractors will pull permits for the project and get started as soon as possible. They will use heavy equipment to excavate a hole in the ground slightly larger than the storm shelter, then prepare the base to ensure that it doesn’t shift over time.

Unlike septic system installations, excavating for a storm shelter doesn’t usually generate a lot of extra dirt. The excess dirt can be used to fill in around the above-ground portion of the shelter, where the door will be situated. Once the new storm cellar is in place, homeowners should avoid planting trees or shrubs nearby. Their roots could disrupt the emergency shelter or create cracks in its surfaces, causing leaks.

Maintaining a Storm Shelter

There’s no predicting when the family will need to retreat to the emergency shelter. Most of the time, there’s little warning before a tornado hits. Keep the storm shelter in a state of good repair by ensuring that no water can infiltrate it and the door is easily accessible and is not jammed. Open up the storm shelter periodically to allow sufficient airflow and check to make sure there’s no moisture leaking in. If there are any leaks, call a contractor immediately to have them sealed and clean the entire shelter after the work has been completed to remove mold and mildew.

Most families keep their emergency shelters stocked to make sure they’ll have what they need to weather a serious storm. When stocking a storm shelter, include plenty of canned food and a can opener, extra blankets, warm clothes, flashlights and batteries, water, a portable battery-powered radio to get information about the storm, and an emergency first-aid kit. Most families also include some board games or cards, books, or other items that can help everyone pass the time more comfortably while underground.
